It won a maximum five-star rating in a comprehensive testing session in which Computer Shopper gave it a thorough workout, comparing it with some of the leading brands available today. They reported that AntiVirus Plus 2009 slipped up only once when it was checking for malware samples. And during their false positive tests, Computer Shopper was delighted to see that only once was VirusScan caught on the hop when it raised a false alarm over a parental monitoring package which deliberately mimicked a Trojan. Computer Shopper was especially pleased to see the network feature. This was activated each time they connected their PC to a new network. The software would ask if it was a Public, Standard, or Trusted network, and depending on the answer, would offer different levels of security. Another feature of note was the large Scan and Update buttons which appear at the top left of the window and form a key part of the functional interface. The Common Tasks facility includes a Lockdown Firewall feature which, when activated, immediately acts as a block to all network access. Computer Shopper was particularly pleased that this could be activated if the user noticed an attack. Still within Common Tasks and there were other notable features highlighted, including computer maintenance tools (complete with a defragmenter), a recent event history and a handy option to trust/mistrust a user’s network. There is also an Advanced Interface with a number of key features. These include Reports and Logs facilities, which allow a user to see recent events and scan logs. Restore allows the user to remove programmes, that have been identified as trouble, from the quarantine area and Configure is the route to the settings menu. The Settings Menu is a versatile feature which allows the user to disable various features of their firewall and malware protection. A user can also modify the ability of a programme to access the internet and make a number of changes to their operating system. Also, it allows a user to add programmes and URLs to black, or white, lists. Furthermore, the SiteAdvisor tool uses McAfee’s huge files of web data to warn a user about possibly harmful sites. As a final commendation, Computer Shopper highlighted the fact that the AntiVirus Plus 2009 came out the clear winner in their malware prevention and removal tests. And when the product’s top performance was added to it’s competitive price tag, AntiVirus Plus 2009 became the obvious recipient of the Computer Shopper Best Buy.
