Norton Safe Web was released in August 2008 in Beta and must be installed with Norton Internet Security 2009 Beta. The key features of this product include:
- Website safety rating when used with Google, Yahoo, and MSN live
- Anti-Phishing protection to detect phishing websites and block consumers from clicking on those sites
- Full site reports to show detailed information about why a website has received its rating
Norton Safe Web is advertised to test for the following threats:
- Adware/spyware
- Browser exploits
- Viruses
- Risky affiliations
McAfee Site Advisor has been protecting customers for longer than Norton Safe Web. This product provides:
- Website safety ratings when used with Google, Yahoo, MSN Live, and Ask
- AntiPhishing protection to detect phishing websites and detection of dangerous phishing links in emails with McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus
- Full site reports to show detailed information about why a website has received its rating with a consumer response option allowing the user to leave feedback on this rating
- McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus also checks links in instant messages and works independently of other PC security software
In addition to surpassing Norton Safe Web's features, McAfee Site Advisor also tests for far more threats, including:
- Adware/spyware
- Browser exploits
- Viruses
- Risky affiliations
- Abuses of personal information
- Spam
- Scamming/deceptive websites
Norton Safe Web uses a similar rating system to the one developed for McAfee SiteAdvisor. Unlike McAfee Site Advisor, Norton Safe Web does not continuously check websites for security threats. Instead, the product appears to rely mainly on feedback from users.
It is also noteworthy, that in a recent Consumer Report evaluation of anti-phishing products, McAfee Site Advisor was ranked #1, while Norton Safe Web ranked number four.
